“Hello sir, I have been told that I may need a birdcage type scaffold, can you help me?”
This is a question that we get asked on a regular basis with the same answer given to most of our enquiries, “yes, of course, we can!!!”
What is Birdcage Scaffold?
The term ‘birdcage scaffold’ is thrown around quite often in the scaffolding world and probably conjures up all sorts of images in the heads of people that have no idea what this is. A birdcage scaffold is basically a scaffold structure mainly designed and erected to carry out works to roof spaces or ceilings where Elevated work platforms (EWP’s) are not practical. Birdcage scaffolds are generally self-supporting with no uses for wall anchors or ties to surrounding walls or structures (as is the case with most other scaffolds).
Birdcage Scaffold Size
They will usually take the form of a large cube with a high minimum base width to height ratio. Working decks are normally only required at the top but can also be placed every 2m to 3m for projects that require walls or columns to be worked on.
When to use Birdcage Scaffolding
Some examples of where Stronghold Hire has used birdcage scaffolds:
- Installation of glass balustrades at a multi-level shopping centre.
- Installation of the false ceiling over a large stair void in a hotel.
- To assist in the construction of bridges around the piers.
- Replacement of roof panels in a commercial warehouse.
- To support formwork for a suspended concrete slab.
As mentioned in example 5, the birdcage scaffold can also be designed to withstand heavy forces such as a new concrete slab or temporary propping of a bridge or roof structure. Correct bracing and bay width space is extremely important for these types of heavy-duty birdcage scaffolds, sometimes known as high-strutting.
