Challenging Scaffold Project in Camperdown, NSW

At Stronghold Hire, we pride ourselves on delivering safe, reliable, and innovative scaffolding solutions, no matter how complex the job. One of our recent projects in Camperdown, NSW, put all of our skills to the test — facing multiple logistical and safety challenges that required creative thinking, precision, and teamwork.

Powerline Hazards on Every Elevation

One of the standout challenges on this project was the presence of live powerlines on every elevation of the building. This required us to coordinate closely with Ausgrid to schedule work around a very tight power outage window. Timing was everything, as any delays could have meant waiting weeks for the next scheduled shutdown. To comply with safety regulations, we also installed plywood barriers as electrical insulation on all exposed sides, following Ausgrid’s strict guidelines. Safety was our top priority, and our team worked efficiently to ensure everything was completed within the scheduled outage period.

Design Constraints: Squeezing It All In

Space was extremely limited on this job. We needed to install a stretcher stair, a 2-ton loading bay, and a 5-board wide working platform— all within the confines of a narrow pavement. On top of that, we had to maintain uninterrupted pedestrian access beneath the scaffold. Our in-house design team came up with a bespoke layout that allowed all elements to be safely and efficiently incorporated, maximising the available space while meeting all compliance requirements.

Traffic and Pedestrian Management

With such tight access and work happening in a busy urban area, traffic and pedestrian control became critical. Our team implemented a comprehensive traffic and pedestrian management plan to ensure the public remained safe and disruption was kept to a minimum. Barriers, signage, and spotters were all part of the process as we erected the scaffold in stages.

Tight Rear Lane Access

The rear of the property presented its own set of problems. The laneway was extremely narrow, making delivery and setup of materials quite difficult. To make things work, we had to install the outside legs of the scaffold onto jersey curbs, which provided a stable base while still keeping the lane accessible for other vehicles.

Working Around Existing Steel Supports

To add to the complexity, a large steel support beam had been installed around the perimeter of the building to help keep the structure stable. This left us with very little room to work with, especially on the inside leg of the scaffold. To overcome this, we secured the inside leg directly onto the steel, a move that required custom fittings and precise engineering to ensure load integrity and overall stability.
