At Stronghold Hire, we recently completed another challenging facade scaffold installation, this time on a unit block overlooking beautiful Maroubra Beach. While the ocean views were spectacular, the project itself presented a number of engineering and logistical challenges that required careful planning and an experienced installation team.

The scaffold was required to provide safe access to the building façade for remedial works, however there were several unique challenges that needed to be overcome before we could even begin erecting the scaffold.

Lightweight Aluminium System Solves Access Challenge

One of the biggest challenges on this project was that the scaffold needed to be erected directly on top of a cantilevered concrete awning. Normally, this type of structure may require back-propping to transfer loads safely through the building below.

In this case, the client specifically requested that no back-propping be installed, which meant every kilogram mattered.

Our solution was to utilise our lightweight modular aluminium scaffold system. Compared to traditional steel scaffold, aluminium significantly reduces the overall loading while still providing a strong and safe working platform.

Our engineering team completed detailed load calculations before submitting the design to the project engineer for approval. The final design was approved without the need for any back-propping, saving the client considerable time, disruption and cost.

Tight Site Access? No Problem.

Working in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs often means dealing with narrow streets, limited parking and busy traffic, and Maroubra Beach was certainly no exception. Fortunately, Stronghold Hire operates a fleet of vehicles ranging from small utes through to larger crane trucks, allowing us to choose the right vehicle for each project. This meant we could deliver materials efficiently without causing unnecessary disruption to local traffic or residents.

After nearly two decades working throughout Sydney, tight access sites have become second nature to our team.

Working Safely on an Exposed Edge

The first stage of the installation required our scaffolders to establish the base of the scaffold on an exposed edge. Safety always comes first.

Before any scaffold components were installed, our team set up temporary static lines and worked in full fall restraint using harnesses. This ensured our installers remained protected until the first lift of scaffold was fully established and the permanent working platform was in place. Planning each stage of the installation is just as important as the finished scaffold itself.

A Better Solution Around Overhead Power Lines

This project also involved overhead power lines located close to the building. Traditionally, many scaffold companies would install plywood sheeting to the outside face of the scaffold as a protective barrier. While effective, it can be heavy, time-consuming and difficult to work with.

At Stronghold Hire, we’re always looking at new products and better ways of doing things.

For this project we trialled a product called Power Safe Mesh and it exceeded our expectations. It provided an excellent solution around the overhead power lines while being quicker to install and much easier to handle than traditional plywood sheeting.

We’re confident this product will become part of our standard approach on many future projects involving similar hazards.

Protecting the Public Below

Whenever scaffold is erected above footpaths or busy roads, protecting the public becomes one of the highest priorities. Throughout the installation, our team implemented strict public protection measures, including:

  • Every tool was fitted with a lanyard.
  • Every loose scaffold component was tethered until securely fixed into position.
  • Controlled lifting procedures were followed throughout the installation.
  • Additional exclusion zones and pedestrian management were implemented where required.

These procedures are standard practice for Stronghold Hire and are the same safety systems we use on high-risk commercial projects throughout the Sydney CBD, major infrastructure projects and bridge works.
