Full Weather Protection for a Live Residential Insurance Build

Project Overview

Stronghold Hire was engaged for a complex insurance remediation project in Queens Park, Sydney. The scope involved the complete removal and replacement of the property’s roof, windows, and external cladding following significant damage.

While this type of work is relatively common in the insurance space, what made this project particularly unique was the internal condition of the home — all walls, ceilings, flooring, and joinery had already been completed. Put simply, the structure needed to be opened up externally while remaining completely dry internally.

The Challenge

This project presented a number of key considerations:

  • The building envelope (roof, cladding, windows) had to be fully removed
  • Internal finishes were complete and highly susceptible to water damage
  • The home remained a live, high-value residential environment
  • Works needed to proceed regardless of Sydney’s unpredictable weather

Without proper protection, even minor rain ingress could have resulted in major rework, delays, and additional insurance costs.

Our Solution: Engineered Scaffold with Full Shrink Wrap Encapsulation

To manage these risks, Stronghold Hire designed and installed a fully engineered scaffold system combined with complete shrink wrap encapsulation.

Scaffold System:

A full perimeter scaffold system was installed to safely access all elevations of the property. The system was designed to accommodate:

  • Multiple trades working simultaneously
  • Safe access for roof and façade replacement
  • Load requirements for materials and workforce
  • Integration with a temporary roof system
  • A purpose-built loading bay to allow efficient material handling on site

Thanks to excellent site access and favourable conditions, installation was straightforward. We were able to utilise suitable existing structure for tie-ins, eliminating the need for counterweights and simplifying the overall design.

Shrink Wrap & Temporary Roof

The critical component of this project was the shrink wrap encapsulation.

We installed a fully sealed shrink wrap system, including a temporary roof structure, to ensure:

  • Complete weatherproofing of the building
  • Protection of all internal finishes
  • Ability for trades to work uninterrupted in all weather conditions

The wrap was installed tight to the structure to minimise wind load impact while maintaining effective water runoff.

Engineering & Experience

All Stronghold Hire shrink wrap projects are fully engineered, and this project was no exception.

The design accounted for:

  • Increased wind loads due to encapsulation
  • Structural stability of the temporary roof
  • Safe load transfer and tie-in locations
  • Compliance with all relevant Australian Standards

Shrink wrap is not something that can simply be added onto a scaffold — it requires detailed planning, engineering, and experienced installation.

Stronghold Hire are specialists in scaffold shrink wrap systems and have been delivering these types of installations for many years across Sydney. Our experienced and qualified installers understand the nuances involved, ensuring each project is delivered safely, efficiently, and to a high standard.

Outcome

The result was a fully protected work environment that allowed the builder and trades to proceed without delay.

Key outcomes included:

  • Zero water ingress to internal finishes
  • Program maintained despite weather conditions
  • Safe and efficient access for all trades
  • Streamlined material handling via integrated loading bay
  • High-quality finishes preserved throughout the build

For the client and insurer, this meant avoiding costly rework and keeping the project on schedule.

Why Shrink Wrap Was Essential on This Project

On insurance projects like this, where internal works are already complete, shrink wrap is not a luxury — it’s a necessity.

Without it, risks include:

  • Water damage to completed interiors
  • Delays due to weather stoppages
  • Increased insurance costs and claims

By investing in a properly engineered scaffold and shrink wrap system upfront, these risks are eliminated.
